Mark: Confronting the Powers

One of the major themes of the Gospel of Mark is Jesus' confrontation of "the powers." The powers is a catch-all term for all forces of darkness and evil in the New Testament—both spiritual and physical. When Jesus heals, He's confronting "the powers." When Jesus casts our demons, he's confronting "the powers." When Jesus pushes back on the oppressive rules and reigns of both Pharisees and Romans, he's confronting "the powers."
