What we believe matters for the world we create. We must also attend to what we believe because ideas matter. What we believe about God, ourselves, creation, salvation, and the like is the bedrock from which both our intentional and unintentional action comes. If we believe that God is punitive in the end, then we will create a society that expends most of its energy on punishment rather than restoration. If we believe that God’s desired destiny for creation is toward its destruction, then our aim of stewarding creation toward flourishing will be founded on shaky ground. Examples such as these are countless. Ideas matter and are the roots of our faith and action.
The Table is a community in which people certainly believe a variety of things but in which all find common ground in our fascination with the person of Jesus. That is to be embraced even as we clearly lay out some of the beliefs that we feel are deeply helpful for growth and moving toward a more beautiful gospel than many of us have previously known.
